Bark Beetle Treatments

Protect Your Trees from Bark Beetles With Northern Utah’s Trusted & Certified Consulting Arborists

Ips bark beetles (also known as engraver beetles) primarily target stressed pine species, though they can also infest other conifers such as spruce, fir, and hemlock. The first visible sign of infestation is often “fading” in the tree’s crown, where needles turn from yellow to a blotchy reddish-brown. Closer inspection may reveal dry, reddish-brown boring dust (frass) nestled in bark crevices or accumulated at the tree’s base.

Effective Prevention When Started Early

Managing bark beetles focuses heavily on prevention through tree health and when you start prevention before Bark Beetles get in your tree, it works.

Ash Tree Risk Assessment

Early Detection Is Key

Once beetle attack is visible to the average person, the tree is already doomed, and beetles have likely already begun spreading to surrounding healthy trees.

What are Bark Beetles?

Bark Beetles are small, wood-boring insects that live, feed and reproduce in the inner bark (phloem) of trees. While most of the approximately 600 species in North America primarily attack stressed or dying trees, some aggresive species can overwhelm healthy forests, causing significant tree mortality.

Bark beetles are typically about the size of a grain of rice with hard cylindrical bodies that are dark red, brown or black in color. They undergo a four-stage life cycle: egg, larva, pupa and adult. The adults bore through the bark to create “galleries” or tunnels where they lay eggs. Once hatched, larvae create their own radiating tunnels as they feed on the tree’s nutrient-conducting tissue.

Bark beetles harm trees through a combination of physical damage and fungal infection. Many species carry symbiotic fungi called “blue stain fungus” which clogs the tree’s vascular system and hastens its death.

Our 3-Step Bark Beetle Treatment Process

Step 1: Evergreen Tree Assessment

Our ISA certified arborist will conduct a thorough evaluation of all evergreen trees on your property, documenting species, health status, size and location to develop a protection strategy. We’ll perform basic diagnostic techniques on as many trees as we can – not just the ones you’re worried about, because a green tree doesn’t tell us everything about its health.

Step 2: Risk Analysis & Education

You’ll spend a full hour learning about bark beetle biology, Utah’s timeline, and tree physiology specific to your property. Bring a notebook—this isn’t a sales pitch, it’s a masterclass in tree care. We’ll explain why your maintenance practices matter more than any treatment we provide, plus give you cost analysis comparing prevention to removal and replacement expenses.

Step 3: Customized Protection Plan

You’ll receive a detailed management strategy with treatment schedules prioritized by tree value and budget. For large estates, we help you focus resources on your most important specimens while planning long-term canopy management. Not every evergreen tree needs immediate treatment—we’ll tell you the truth about what can be saved and what’s most strategic for your property.

Our prevention-first approach gives you the confidence and protection strategy to preserve your valuable evergreen trees while others face devastating losses.

Protect Your Evergreen Trees Before It's Too Late

Native bark beetles have already claimed over 70,000 acres of conifer trees in the Intermountain West in a single year—and they are actively decimating forests and residential landscapes across Utah. Every day you wait is another day closer to the internal destruction of your pines and spruces. Our preventative trunk treatments are nearly 100% effective when applied to healthy trees, but once the needles turn red, the beetles have already won. Protect your property’s legacy and schedule a professional risk assessment today.

Keeping trees healthy and vigorous is key. Prevention treatment with emamectin benzoate is best when applied before bark beetle infestation. Treatment should start immediately when trees are stressed due to drought and other factors or when bark beetles are detected in surrounding trees or neighborhoods.

Our full assessment includes tree identification and mapping, individual tree health evaluation, treatment priority ranking based on tree value and location, cost analysis comparing prevention to removal/replacement and customized protection scheduling for your property.

Treatment success depends on infestation severity. Early stage infestations may respond to intensive treatment but success rates drop dramatically once symptoms appear. Prevention before infestation is far more effective and cost efficient than treating infected trees.

We help prioritize treatment based on tree value, health and strategic importance to your property. Not every pine or spruce tree needs immediate treatment—we develop phased protection plans that focus resources on your most valuable specimens while planning long term canopy management strategies.

We service properties across Northern Utah, including Salt Lake City, Davis County, Weber County, Summit County, Ogden, Morgan County and the Ogden Valley.
